Chain “stretch” in service is usually dominated by wear at articulating joint surfaces rather than elastic growth of the side plates. As clearance accumulates at many joints, the measured distance over multiple pitches increases. Hollow pin conveyor systems add attachment interfaces that should be inspected at the same time.
Measure Multiple Pitches
Use a straight, tensioned section of chain and measure across a defined number of pitches. Record the same number of pitches at each inspection so trend data is comparable. One link can be damaged without representing the condition of the entire strand.
Inspect Joint Motion
Stiff joints, corrosion products, contamination or inadequate lubrication can change articulation before elongation becomes obvious. Watch how the chain enters and leaves the sprocket and note any link that does not articulate freely.
Check The Attachments
Cross-rods and carriers can add oscillating or side loads near the hollow pin. Look for fretting, ovalized holes, bent rods, loose retainers and contact marks on side plates. These observations help distinguish a chain-joint issue from an attachment-system issue.
Compare Both Strands
On a paired conveyor, compare elongation and tension on both sides. Unequal wear can indicate uneven load sharing, shaft alignment problems, different contamination exposure or one strand being replaced without the other.
Use Trend Limits
Establish inspection and replacement criteria from the chain supplier, machine builder and site risk assessment. Do not publish or apply a generic percentage as though it were universal for every conveyor. Sprocket condition, speed, guarding and process criticality can change the acceptable maintenance decision.
