How To Measure A Hollow Pin Chain For Replacement

How To Measure A Hollow Pin Chain For Replacement

Replacement work is easiest when the chain is treated as a measured mechanical interface rather than a familiar model name. A hollow pin chain must match the sprocket engagement geometry and also accept the rods, pins, fixtures or carriers that pass through its hollow pins. Record both functions before asking for a quotation.

Measure The Pitch

Measure across several consecutive pin centres and divide by the number of pitches. Measuring several pitches reduces the effect of local wear and hand-tool error. If the chain is badly elongated, also measure a less-worn section or compare against the sprocket pitch geometry.

Do not use overall link length as a substitute for pitch. Pitch is the centre-to-centre distance between adjacent chain joints and is one of the first dimensions needed to identify a compatible chain family.

Record The Roller

Measure roller diameter and the clear width between inner plates. These dimensions influence sprocket engagement and available running clearance. If the chain uses a bush instead of a conventional roller in a particular design, photograph it clearly and note that observation in the RFQ.

Check The Hollow Bore

Measure the hollow-pin inside diameter, pin outside diameter where accessible, and the overall width across the outer plates or pin ends. Then measure the actual rod or attachment that passes through the pin. A replacement chain can match the pitch yet still be unusable if the hollow opening is too small or the attachment retention interferes with the side plates.

Document The Sprocket

Record tooth count, outside diameter, shaft arrangement, centre distance and any readable sprocket markings. Photograph tooth wear from the side and from the chain-entry direction. If a new chain is installed on heavily worn sprockets, engagement can remain poor even when the chain dimensions are correct.

Build The RFQ

For an additional terminology reference, you can also review hollow-pin-chain.com. Use any external terminology as a secondary reference only; final replacement selection should be based on measured geometry, actual duty and supplier confirmation.

Send the measurements with a straight-on photo of the chain, one close-up of the hollow pin, one sprocket photo and a sketch showing the cross-rod span. That package usually resolves more ambiguity than a model number alone.

Common Questions

Can pitch be measured with the chain installed?

Yes, when access is safe and the conveyor is locked out. Measure several pitches on the straight strand and avoid using a visibly damaged section.

Should I replace sprockets with the chain?

Inspect them at the same time. Hooked or uneven tooth profiles can accelerate wear of a new chain and may indicate alignment problems.

What if the model marking is unreadable?

A dimension set plus clear photos is often enough to narrow the family. Include the application, speed and attachment details to complete the selection.

Why measure the cross-rod too?

The hollow bore is an attachment interface. Rod diameter, span and retention determine whether the replacement chain can accept the existing conveyor hardware.
