Stainless Hollow Pin Chain Corrosion Selection
“Stainless” is not a complete corrosion specification. A useful RFQ describes the actual moisture, chemical, temperature and cleaning exposure so the chain supplier can confirm the appropriate documented material configuration and maintenance practice.
Describe The Chemistry
List cleaning agents, concentration, exposure time and rinse practice where known. Chlorides, acids, alkaline cleaners and sanitizers can create very different corrosion conditions. Avoid selecting solely from a broad label such as “food grade” or “washdown.”
Describe The Temperature
Temperature affects corrosion behavior, lubricant performance and thermal expansion. Include normal operating temperature, cleaning temperature and any short-duration peaks.
Review Mixed Metals
Cross-rods, collars, fasteners and machine frames may use different metals from the chain. Wet mixed-metal contact can create localized corrosion concerns. The conveyor should be reviewed as an assembly rather than selecting the chain in isolation.
Plan Lubrication
Stainless chain is not automatically maintenance-free. Lubrication restrictions, wash-off, dry areas and contamination controls all influence wear. Follow the documented practice for the selected chain and the machine’s hygiene requirements.
Inspect Crevices
The hollow bore, rod interface and retention hardware create small spaces where moisture or residue may remain. Design for drainage and access where practical, and include these locations in the inspection plan.
